Hands-on Dental Implant Mini Residency Aruba - Winter 2012




COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course will be structured to provide a defined, multidisciplinary illustration of oral implantology to dentists with limited or no implant experience. The historic, scientific, surgical, restorative and maintenance aspects of this treatment modality will be emphasized. The objective of this course is to introduce the novice to the clinical and laboratory aspects of dental implant therapy. The training is structured to gradually introduce the participants to different levels of implant dentistry. The first two sessions will emphasize patient evaluation, diagnosis, treatment planning and execution of the straightforward cases according to the SAC Classification in Implant Dentistry. Subsequent courses will address the advanced and complex procedures. Hands-on model workshop will accompany each session along with live patient surgery demonstrations.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Understand the past and present clinical development of various types of dental implants
  • Understand the scientific basis for implant-host; biologic and biomechanical relationships
  • Understand the importance of diagnosis, recognize associated complications, and render maintenance procedures specific to implant dentistry
  • Obtain an adequate background for progressing to clinical competency with dental implant restorations
  • Note the importance of developing a working technical relationship with the dental laboratory
  • Understanding step by step implant placement and restoration protocols

FORMAT:

Lectures: (Surgical and Prosthetic)
  • Dental implants overview
  • Patient evaluation and treatment planning
  • Restoring single implants, partially edentulous and full edentulous patients
  • Impressions and basic lab procedures
  • Surgical implant placement
  • Maintenance and recall
Hands-on workshop and live surgery.
  • Implant placement on models
  • Flap and suturing technique
  • Restorative training on implant training models (impressions, model work, etc.)
  • Live patient surgeries (Limited attendance: Maximum 5 participants per session)

Session 2: March 16-18, 2012
  • Surgical principles and flap design
  • Fundamental of osteotomy preparation
  • Four dimensional implant placement for optimal esthetics
  • Suture materials and techniques
  • Impressions techniques in implant dentistry
  • Restorative design
  • Principles of abutment selection
  • Occlusal considerations in implant dentistry
  • Orthodontic considerations
  • Maintenance and recall
  • Complications
Hands-on Workshop:
  • Restorative training on simulated models
  • Incision and suturing techniques
  • Review and case presentation of selected surgical cases by course participates in preparation for live surgery
Live Surgery:
  • Option 1 course participants who are currently practicing in Aruba, will perform live surgery on their own patients, supervised by attending faculty. For US based dentist, arrangements will be made for live surgical training in approved facilities in the US.
  • Option 2 & 3 course participants will have the opportunity to observe live surgery.

Presenters:

Wasseem Attar, DMD

A 1995 graduate of Tufts University School o Dental Medicine. He received a Certificate in Implant training from the same institution. A Diplomate of the American Board of Implantology, Dr. Attar has maintained a private practice in the Boston area since 1999 and has lectured internationally on the subject of implant dentistry.

Jurriaan den Drijver, DDS

den Drijver graduated the Academic Center for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA) in 2001. Since 2006 he specializes in implant dentistry and is a registered implant dentist in the Netherlands. He is member of NVOI, the Dutch Society of Oral Implantology, associate fellow of AAID (American Association of Implant Dentistry) and a member of the ITI, the International Team for Implantology. Together with co-owner Gert Jan de Weerd he manages a referral clinic with multiple-disciplined dentists in Amsterdam.

Gert Jan de Veerd, DDS

Gert Jan de Weerd graduated the Academic Center for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA) in 2001. Since 2005 he specializes in implant dentistry and is a registered implant dentist in the Netherlands. He is member of NVOI, the Dutch Society of Oral Implantology, a member of AAID (American Association of Implant Dentistry) and a member of the ITI, the International Team for Implantology. Together with Jurriaan den Drijver he owns a referral clinic with multiple-disciplined dentists and a dental clinic for general dentistry in Amsterdam.

Rami Jandali, DMD, MS

Dr. Jandali attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine where he received his degree in Dentistry. He then pursued advanced specialized training in porsthodontics at the University at Buffalo and a fellowship in maxillofacial prosthetics at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute Buffalo, New York. Dr. Jandali is a staff prosthodontist and director of the Advanced Education Program in Prosthdontics at the Detroit VA Medical Center. He maintains a private practice limited to implant, esthetic, and reconstructive dentistry in the Detroit Metro area and is a consultant at the Children's Hospital of Michigan. Dr. Jandali is a diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and a fellow of the American College of Prosthodontists and the American Academy of Maxillofacial Prosthetics.

Mounir Kharchaf, DDS, MDS, FACP

Dr. Kharchaf is currently working as an Associate professor and Associate director of prosthodontics at the Arizona school of dentistry and oral health. Dr. Kharchaf is board certified by the American Board of Prosthodontics and a Fellow of the American College of Prosthodontics. He received his dental degree from the University of Tennessee health science center. Dr. Kharchaf pursued advanced training in prosthodontics, Implants and Maxillofacial prosthodontics at the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dr. Kharchaf practices comprehensive oral care with over 15 years of clinical experience. In addition, he maintains a private practice devoted to Esthetic dentistry, Implantology, Fixed and Removable prosthodontics. Dr. Kharchaf lectures extensively, on the topics of prosthodontics, maxillofacial prosthodontics and implant dentistry, nationally as well as internationally.
